Clindamycin phosphate is a water-soluble ester of the semi-synthetic antibiotic derived from lincomycin. This medicine is available in several forms, including oral preparations, ointments, or vaginal suppositories.

Clindamycin phosphate is primarily used to treat infections with anaerobic bacteria. The topical application of clindamycin phosphate can be used to treat mild to moderate acne.

It is also used to treat bone and joint infections (especially those caused by Staphylococcus Aureus), acute otitis media (AOM), gynecological injections (e.g., endometritis, pelvic cellulitis, and postoperative vaginal cuff infection), skin infections, and malaria.

Manual

This medication should be applied to the skin. To use it:

  • clean the area to be treated well;
  • apply a small amount of product and limit the application to the affected area.

Wash your hands after application – except if you applied the product on your hands.

Do not let this product come in contact with your eyes or lips. Do not apply it to skin injured by a cut or scrape.

As a general rule, this product is used twice a day. Your pharmacist may have given you a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. You must apply it regularly and continuously to maintain its beneficial effects.

Do not stop applying it as soon as an improvement is visible. Continue for the indicated treatment time. It is important to follow the dosage on the label. Do not use more or more often than indicated.

If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for the next app, drop the one you forgot. Do not apply more to try to catch up.

Side effects

In addition to its intended effects, this product may occasionally cause certain undesirable effects (side effects), including:

  • it can cause headaches;
  • it can dry out the skin and cause it to peel (flaking);
  • it can irritate locally;
  • Rarely, it can cause severe diarrhea, sometimes several weeks after the end of treatment. In case of severe diarrhea, consult a doctor without delay.

Clindamycin is an antibiotic that comes in various forms. It is used to treat conditions caused by certain types of bacterial infections. The topical solution cures acne. It may take up to eight weeks to see an improvement.

What forms does this medication come in?

Each mL of topical solution contains clindamycin phosphate equivalent to 10 mg of clindamycin (1%). Nonmedicinal ingredients: 50% v/v isopropyl alcohol, propylene glycol, purified water, and, if needed, sodium hydroxide to adjust pH.

How should this drug be used?

Apply a thin layer of the solution twice a day to the area to be treated. Before applying the solution, wash and dry the affected area. Wait at least 2 hours after applying the medication to wash off.

Clindamycin topical solution is alcohol-based, which may cause burning or irritation of the eye and other sensitive areas. Avoid contact with eyes. In case of accidental contact, rinse the affected area thoroughly with cold tap water. To reduce susceptibility to skin irritation, wait at least 30 minutes after shaving to apply the solution.

The solution has an unpleasant taste. Be careful applying it around the mouth.

Its alcohol content makes clindamycin topical solution flammable. Avoid smoking while applying the solution, and do not use it near an open flame.

Several factors can be taken into account to determine the dose a person needs: their weight, their state of health, and the taking of other medicines. If your doctor has recommended a dose other than those listed here, do not change how you take medicine without consulting your doctor first.

Use the medicine for the full duration prescribed by your doctor. Stopping this medication too soon can allow acne-causing bacteria to come back and be harder to treat.

This medicine must be taken as directed by your doctor. If you miss a dose, take medicine as soon as you remember and resume treatment as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, don’t worry about the missed dose and return to the usual dosing schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed dose. If you are unsure of what to do after missing a dose, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Store this medication at room temperature, away from light and moisture, and out of the reach of children.

Do not dispose of medicines in the wastewater (e.g., not in the sink or the toilet bowl) or with the household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of unused or expired medicines.

In which cases is this medication not recommended?

Do not use clindamycin topical solution under the following circumstances:

  • an allergy to clindamycin, lincomycin, or any ingredient in the medication;
  • a history of colitis caused by the use of antibiotics (inflammation of the intestine);
  • a history of inflammatory bowel disease (e.g., ulcerative colitis).

What are the possible side effects of this drug?

Many medications can cause side effects. A side effect is an adverse response to a drug when taken in normal doses. It can be mild or severe, temporary or permanent.

The side effects listed below are not experienced by everyone who takes this medication. If you are concerned about side effects, discuss the risks and benefits of this medication with your doctor.

At least 1% of people taking this medication have reported the following side effects. Many of these side effects are manageable, and a few may go away on their own over time.

Consult your doctor if you experience these side effects and if they are severe or bothersome. Your pharmacist may be able to advise you on what to do if these side effects appear:

  • worsening acne or new acne breakouts;
  • an itch;
  • a rash or redness of the skin;
  • irritated or oily skin;
  • dryness and flaking of the skin;
  • a burning or stinging sensation in the skin.

Most of the side effects listed below do not happen very often, but they could cause serious problems if you do not see your doctor or get medical attention.

Check with your doctor as soon as possible if any of the following side effects occur:

  • abdominal pain;
  • skin rash, itching, swelling, or any other sign of irritation that was not present before starting treatment;
  • gas, bloating;
  • indigestion;
  • headache;
  • nauseous;
  • vomitings.

Stop taking the drug and seek medical attention immediately if a response such as  :

  • signs of an allergic reaction (e.g., skin rash, hives, swelling of the lips or face, difficulty breathing);
  • diarrhea (watery and sharp, sometimes bloody);
  • abdominal pain or severe stomach cramps.

Some people may experience side effects other than those listed. Consult your doctor if you notice any symptom that worries you while using this medication.

Are there any other precautions or warnings?

Before using any medication, tell your doctor about any medical conditions or allergies you may have, the medications you use, and any other important facts about your health. Women should mention if they are pregnant or breastfeeding. These factors may influence how you should use this medicine.

Allergies: If you have any skin allergies, discuss with your doctor how this medication may affect your medical condition, how your medical condition may affect the dosing and effectiveness of this medication, and whether any specific medical supervision.

Diarrhea: People using this medication may have diarrhea caused by infection with Clostridium difficile bacteria. Get medical help right away if you notice loose, watery, bloody stools with or without fever or stomach cramps after using this medication. Diarrhea caused by infection with Clostridium difficile bacteria can lead to serious health problems if not treated properly.

Bacterial resistance: the abuse of antibiotics can cause a proliferation of microorganisms not killed by them, such as other bacteria or fungi. It can make it easier for other infections to develop or prevent the antibiotic from working in the future. Contact your doctor if you experience any new symptoms while using clindamycin or if your acne symptoms seem to worsen. Pregnancy: This medication should not be used during pregnancy unless the benefits outweigh the risks. If pregnancy occurs while using this medication, contact your doctor immediately.

Breastfeeding: It is not known if clindamycin topical solution passes into breast milk. If you take this medicine while breastfeeding, your baby may feel the effects. Consult your doctor to find out if you should continue breastfeeding.

Children: Neither the safety nor the effectiveness of this medication has been established for children under 13 years of age.

Can other agents interact with this medication?

There may be an interaction between clindamycin topical solution and any of the following agents:

  • neuromuscular transmission-blocking agents (e.g., acetylcholine, pancuronium);
  • aminoglycosides (e.g., gentamicin, tobramycin);
  • other topical medications (applied to the skin);
  • erythromycin.

If you are taking any of these medicines, consult your doctor or pharmacist. In your case, your doctor may ask you to:

  • stop taking any of the drugs;
  • replacing one of the drugs with another;
  • change the way you take one or both of the medicines;
  • change nothing at all.

The interference of one drug with another does not always lead to discontinuing taking one of them. Ask your doctor what to do in case of drug interactions.

Medications other than those listed above may interact with this medication. Tell your doctor about everything you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medications and herbal remedies. Do not forget to mention any supplements you take.
