Hoka One One Clifton 7 Facts, Deals Running Shoes Buyer’s Guide 2022

Although Clifton was not one of the initial models of the French brand HOKA ONE, it has undoubtedly been one of the most relevant, if not the most important, in the rapid and brutal rise of the brand that gave rise to the current trend. Of maximalism.

Although it is almost repetitive to talk about the first HOKA ONE ONE Clifton, the truth is that it broke the market with its great cushioning, soft feel, huge profile, and low weight. It was unheard of and is a model that will go down in history for its influence and significance in this world.

HOKA gradually changed the Clifton and the first three versions more or less maintained the original parameters that I have reported, but, indeed, especially the HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 4 and to a lesser extent, the HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 5 were not the most successful. It’s a shame because they coincided with the popularization of the brand in Europe and, of course, in Spain.

Fortunately, HOKA not only listened to the riders and made some very interesting changes to the HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 6 but also reissued the original Clifton for those of us who longed for that model despite only having spent five years since its launch.

The HOKA ONE ONE ONE Clifton 7 has seemed a curious shoe since it is a HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 6 with a new upper. Still, the overall performance and experience I have had with it have been better than with the sixth version; although I liked it a lot, I was not as happy as with this new Clifton.

I will go over the reasons why I think this has happened.

Chassis and midsole

As I have commented in the introduction, the midsole and sole are, according to HOKA, the same as in the HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 6, so I have little to add to what I already commented last year when I tried that edition.

We still have the same measurements of 32mm in the heel and 27mm in the forefoot with a resulting drop of 5mm and a base width of 115mm in the forefoot and 97mm in the heel (on size 10 US).

It is a shoe with good width, especially in the heel and midfoot, and quite high. Still, it does not feel unstable due to the Active Foot Frame technology that cradles and surrounds the foot giving security and confidence in any type of landing we make.

The construction of the midsole is made with an EVA of 43º hardness, very soft, clearly below the market average, and slightly below the majority of materials considered soft based on polyurethanes or similar.

Like I said, my experience with the HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 7 has been somewhat better. After measuring the hardnesses of both, I see that this seventh edition is slightly softer (two degrees softer), a change that falls within the margin of error of this material, so perhaps, unintentionally, my pair is somewhat softer.

Hoka One One Clifton 7 Facts, Deals Running Shoes Buyer’s Guide 2022

Be that as it may, I think that the changes that I have experienced with the HOKA ONE Clifton 7 in terms of transition and softer touch have been more due to the heat that softens the EVA and makes it lose response than to the materials.

Keep in mind that I have tested the HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 7 in August with more than 30ºC while I tested the Clifton 6 at the end of October and the beginning of November 2019 at 15ºC. If we add to that the chance of the 2nd minus in hardness, it is very likely that it is the cause that I liked the Clifton 7 much more, so I would ask HOKA that in the future HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 8, this turning to a slightly softer touch would come standard.

As for geometry, work is one of the points that make the HOKA ONE Clifton 7 a great option for long distances.

The curved rocking chair chassis delays fatigue, favors a straighter posture, and is dynamically a design focused on dispersing impact due to its large base volume and some details, such as the oblique cuts in the gray EVA on the heel.

They are not aesthetic elements, but rather they favor the collapse of the damping so that it is fluid and that, when the materials come under load and deform, they do not damage and force others to do the same. In this case, these cuts favor that the upper does not get too much force from the impact, and we lose fit around the ankle when landing.

When we talk about a Clifton, and then I will expand on analyzing the last, you have to consider the arch’s height.

It has always had a leading arch because, being a curved chassis, this is practically innate and necessary to focus the impact in that area and move it away from the heel, which will be beveled so that it does not intervene before the midfoot.

Well, since Clifton 4 and 5, the arch has relaxed. In the HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 6, it was already quite tolerable, and in this seventh version, in theory, it should be the same as in the six, but, as I say, I have noticed something softer that makes the bow less intrusive.

That is why the HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 7 has been much more pleasant for me in cushioning, comfort and transition, but, as I always say, if you have never owned a Clifton or a high arch,,, shoe, I would recommend you try it.

Some people love the Clifton for this feature or despite it (the latter is my case), but some riders are not quite comfortable with these forms.

In short, as I already told you, they are improving, and this HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 7 has seemed like a very worthy older sister to the successful HOKA ONE ONE Rincon.

Sole

The sole has the same behavior I experienced in the previous version: quite complete in general, both in terrain and behavior.

We have three oversized pieces in the heel for durability, primarily focused on the impact zones. Although it is difficult to land so far back as a rocking chair chassis, HOKA has wanted to protect that area, perhaps also for the people who walk with the Clifton, who are not few.

The rest of the heel and midfoot is an exposed gray EVA which is the one that will experience the wear of the most prematurely. At 150-200 km, we will see how the triangular blocks are already peeled, and many begin to lose relief alarmingly.

Perhaps visually, we do not like to see it, but the truth is that it does not affect the shoe’s useful life too much. The exposed EVA wear is normal with these kilometers, but the sole’s functionality will be considerably greater due, mainly, to the forefoot and heel protection.

The forefoot is quite well covered by highly durable rubber over 80º hard. Each panel of this black rubber is embossed in triangular studs that will be key to grip on dry and wet asphalt.

Hoka One One Clifton 7 Facts, Deals Running Shoes Buyer’s Guide 2022

On dry asphalt, it works very well; it has a luxurious grip and has no problems.

On wet asphalt, the large surface in contact with the shoe’s ground does not help much to slow down the aqua-planning, but the presence of these studs and the large grooves engraved on the sole makes that sensation of slipping is very slight at first—moment (until the studs grab the ground).

During the test, it rained a lot and, although you always have to be careful on smooth surfaces (bike lanes, zebra crossings, the sidewalk on wet asphalt you defend yourself. It will have to do with the passage of kilometers and the wear of the sole how this evolves, surely for the worse.

In general, I liked the sole a lot because of the grip of the studs and because of its versatility; on land, it works very well because of its geometries (grooves, shapes of the panels and studs, etc.).

I predict about 800 km with my 75 kg of weight and average rhythms in the use of 70% asphalt and 30% dirt, always knowing that in the first 200 km, the exposed EVA will begin to peel.

The flexibility is wholly secondary in any HOKA maximalist because it is how the rocker is responsible for making the transition, requiring fewer muscles and bones of the foot. Hence, there is no need to be a flexible shoe (that would break the functionality of the Clifton).

Despite this, the multiple front grooves help the shoe not feel too stiff to be pleasant; it has a margin of flexibility (within the stiffness of the curved chassis) so that the HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 7 is comfortable and natural when running.

Upper

The changes in this seventh version concerning the 2019 model focus on the upper The image changes a bit as soon as we see the heel of the HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 7 that has jumped on the bandwagon of this latest trend to create a curved back ( called elf-eared) heel.

As I said, this new curved heel is a trend widely used lately that derives from the original Adidas Ultraboost, and that seems to me to be a successful change of shapes in any modern shoe since it avoids friction against the Achilles and facilitates the sliding of the foot at the time to put it on us.

HOKA has eliminated the rear handle by placing this new curved heel. Still, the truth is that it is almost more comfortable and functional to grip the curvature toe than the handle of the HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 6, so I do not see it as a snag but rather the opposite.

The mesh is the same material that the sixth edition used, only that in this Clifton 7, we have more ventilation holes and slight changes in the distribution of the same. The midfoot gusset seams have also been removed.

All these changes have a clear motivation and are due to the presence of a novelty, particularly the one that seems most important to me (more than the new heel): the tongue is attached to the chassis, something that did not happen in the sixth edition.

Hoka One One Clifton 7 Facts, Deals Running Shoes Buyer’s Guide 2022

Adding the elastic side panels that hold the tongue reduces the need for external reinforcements such as those seams. Better ventilation is needed as we have one more layer of material (no matter how thin) between the foot and the outside.

That is why the distribution and number of holes in the upper have been changed and increased to maintain the level of ventilation, which is at the same and good level as the HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 6.

In addition to being attached to the side, the tongue is not too thick; it has perfect padding for the segment in which the shoe is located and is very comfortable and pleasant.

Meanwhile, the laces remain the same: flat, slightly elastic, and with a 7 + 1 hole system, with the eighth lower central hole, which is always appreciated in a shoe with a marked arch and a somewhat “controversial” front last. To have the possibility of making changes in the structure of the laces and adapting the shoe to the needs of each runner’s foot.

Last

The last is a very important section for a HOKA since they have quite different shapes than normal, and not everyone appreciates them or can adapt to them.

Despite being one of the best-known models, the Clifton also has one of the most complicated HOKA lasts.

The first and most important thing is that, as in almost all shoes with a rocking chair shape and curved chassis, the arch is noticeable although, more than the arch, it is the middle zone.

This area is very protagonist, and it will be the one with the main impact. On many occasions, runners who land on their heels and make the transition to this mid-zone will notice a “lump,” but this sensation is normal, and you have to get used to it.

In most cases, it will not be a problem, but this marked arch will annoy a small percentage of runners who, due to the shape of the foot (flat or low arch, or sudden strong pronation, etc.), are not compatible with these geometries.

Hoka One One Clifton 7 Facts, Deals Running Shoes Buyer’s Guide 2022

On the contrary, many runners with fasciitis and tendonitis problems in the Achilles will receive these geometries as a gift from the gods because, although they will not heal any injury, they will help reduce discomfort such as fasciitis or Achilles tendonitis. For example, the reasoning in the first case is simple since the more support in the fascia, the more relaxed it is and the fewer problems it will give.

Now, I do not understand how a brand like HOKA, which is probably the most used by runners and walkers with fasciitis due to its arch, designs somewhat narrow shapes in the forefoot.

If we analyze the behavior of afoot, we will know that to alleviate the fascia, we not only benefit from a support in the plantar arch but, if we allow the first metatarsal to expand inwards, we will also have a relaxing effect (by shortening the fascia) in that area of the foot.

The Clifton, like other HOKAs, not only does not allow the foot to expand inward but even slightly forces the first metatarsal to the outside of the foot, stretching the fascia. Thanks to the fact that the arch is so protagonist, the negative effect is greatly reduced, but it is a huge incoherence that should review

Hoka One One Clifton 7 Facts, Deals Running Shoes Buyer’s Guide 2022

Regarding Achilles tendonitis, and in this regard, my opinion clashes with many traditional opinions of podiatrists (this must be made clear), after seeing the experience of hundreds of runners, I have concluded that a curved chassis with a marked arc changes both biomechanics and weight distribution of the runner: many find less stress on the Achilles tendon when they run with Clifton and other HOKAs, which has helped many runners with affected Achilles to continue running, they do not cure it, but they do reduce much inconvenience.

I say that it is an opinion that contrasts with that of classic podiatrists (others like me) because a high drop is generally recommended to relax that tendon, which is the right thing to do in many cases.

However, as the market with softer foams is evolving, having a 12 mm drop with a high cushioning journey in the heel, which is carried out suddenly as it is a 45º or softer foam, makes the relaxation of the Achilles does not appear but rather the opposite.

That is why in theory, the drop helps, but you have to know what type of shoe we are going to use with that drop, and many times, as I say, it is the Clifton-type chassis that most benefits runners with these discomforts so, yes is your case, value it.

In terms of sizing, it is correct in length, with a classic forefoot. Indeed, it is slightly more forgiving than the Clifton 4 or the Clifton 5, but I would not consider it a roomy shoe under any circumstances. I have never liked the shapes of the forefoot ‘box’; I consider other wider HOKA models to be the example to follow for future Cliftons for various reasons, some already discussed.

In the midfoot, I had better sensations; the tongue attached to the chassis gives more support to the foot, which reduces my pronation just enough to notice a little less the arch, which translates into a more pleasant sensation in the dynamics of the foot. Shoe, and I think that’s why I liked it a little more than the sixth version.

However, this can be the case for neutrals or people with little pronation, as is my case. For bigger pronators, higher weights, or lower arches, the sensation will be very similar to the HOKA ONE Clifton 6.

The heel has gained comfort, both when putting it on and when running. The shape of the Achilles protector is a hit, it doesn’t interfere at all, and even the inner lining is a bit more luxurious in this new version.

The insole is an Ortholite X40 5mm thick and weighs 24 grams, which is fine as it is a thick insole but not too heavy or hard to the touch, making the Clifton an acceptable choice for insoles.

Speaking of weights, the HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 7 weighs 247 grams (265 grams in size 10 US), very competitive data for the type of shoe it is. It is certainly one of the areas where the Clifton 7 leads in its segment.

Cushioning

It seems that the HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 7 continues on the good path that the sixth edition took up again: shoes with a soft touch, medium / high travel, and a good transition of the tread.

The HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 7 is a very nice and comfortable shoe. The cushioning shines with its quantity and feel, and it’s a pleasure to throw kilometers on it.

The HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 6 and this seventh edition are models that have much more fluid dynamics than previous versions: you can land on your heel and experience a smooth transition with fairly homogeneous cushioning throughout the entire stride cycle.

It is true that it does not have reactive cushioning and that it does not have that responsive or elastic character in its midsole but, thanks to its curvature and weight, it can allow rhythms as fast as the most in its segment. I have taken her to 4: 00 / km so richly (not her habitat, but occasionally she responds well).

In short, the low-density and hard EVA offers us a pleasant touch and a good experience running medium or long distances, which is everything we ask of a Clifton: comfort and lightness.

conclusion

Since the first edition, which I fell in love with, I have gone through various phases of love, hate, resignation, and hope with the Clifton line.

Already last year, the HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 6 opened a new hope in my conception of the Clifton, seeing that little by little, I returned to the correct path (or, at least, the one that I consider correct). This seventh edition has confirmed it: the HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 7 once again wins many integers in the segment of neutral cushioning top of the range and has become a worthy older sister of one of the best current shoes, which is the HOKA ONE ONE Rincon.

I am already looking forward to seeing how Clifton evolves to see if it maintains this path because, of course, it has the potential to eat the market with two or three small changes.

Currently, the HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 7 has nothing to envy its rivals and would be among my top 3 shoes to evaluate if you are a runner who likes curved shoes, low drops or if, of course, you have a certain type. Of discomfort (Achilles, fascia typical HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 7 user:

  • Neutral runners, supinators, or insoles between 65 kg and 90 kg looking for a stable and highly cushioned training shoe for competitions or long-term training on asphalt or gravel at slower rates of 4: 20 / km.

What is the Hoka Clifton 7 GOOD FOR?

It’s lightweight, well-cushioned and long-lasting. It’s an amazing daily trainer, long run shoe, marathon running shoe and recovery shoe. If I had to choose one thing that it does best, I’d say it’s a solid daily trainer. But really, it’s incredibly versatile.

How long do the Hoka Clifton 7 last?

IS THE HOKA CLIFTON 7 DURABLE? Even though the midsole is EVA foam-based, the Clifton holds its cushioning very well. Getting 400 miles out of the shoe is easy, with room for more before any noticeable cushioning degradation occurs.

What’s the difference between Hoka Clifton 7 and 8?

The Clifton 7 made this clear with it’s relatively flat and wide outsole. The Clifton 8 still provides the same versatility and stability, but with a more curved midsole geometry and exaggerated early-stage rocker. This plays out in the widened toe box and smooth transitions while running.

Why is Hoka bad?

Runners tend to overstride or land heavier with a maximalist shoe, increasing forces through the leg. … So if your shoes are aggravating an injury, they’ll probably continue to aggravate it as long as you run in them and vice versa. Hokas won’t prevent injuries as much as they won’t cause them.
