Francois Henri LaLanne’s (1914-2011) famous diet and exercise routine paved the way for him to become an American health icon. He opened the first public gym in Oakland, California, and is best known for his fitness television show. But, he started out as a junk food addict as a child until he felt embarrassed about failing a routine physical at school. This upset him and motivated him to attend health conferences that redirected his life.

LaLanne’s exercise routine began with a series of stretches in bed as soon as she woke up around 5 a.m. Then he went to one of their weight rooms, one had free weights and the other had weight lifting machines. He worked his lower body one day and his upper body the next and the whole routine was changed every 30 days. After 90 minutes of weight lifting, he went to the pool to swim and do water exercises for another 30 minutes.

I only ate twice a day. The first meal was at 11am after training and the second around 7pm, usually at a cafe with his wife. His breakfast consisted of fruit, oatmeal, broth, and four egg whites.

Their dinners at the restaurant began with a salad of 10 raw vegetables and four cooked egg whites. Fish was eaten almost every night and roasted turkey occasionally. He did not eat other types of meat and did not snack between meals. His juicer became popular because Jack simply couldn’t eat that many raw vegetables. She found that the juices made it easier to eat the large amount of vegetables she wanted.

Decades before celebrities like Jane Fonda and Richard Simmons began promoting health and fitness, LaLanne was already widely recognized for publicly preaching the health benefits of regular exercise and a good diet. [3] I have published numerous fitness books and hosted the fitness television show The Jack LaLanne’s Exercise Show from 1951 to 1985. As early as 1936, at age 21, he opened one of the nation’s first fitness gyms in Oakland, California , [2] which became a prototype for dozens of similar gyms named after him.

Early life – Jack LaLanne’s Exercise

LaLanne was born in San Francisco, California, [3] [2] son of Jennie (from single Garaig; 1882-1973) and Jean / John LaLanne (1881-1939), French immigrants from Oloron-Sainte-Marie. They both entered the United States in the 1880s as children in the port of New Orleans. LaLanne had two older brothers, Ervil, who died in infancy (1906-1911), and Norman (1908-2005), who nicknamed him “Jack.” 

[2] He grew up in Bakersfield, California and later moved with his family to Berkeley, California around 1928. In 1939, his father died at the age of 58 in a San Francisco hospital, [8] which LaLanne attributed to “Coronary thrombosis and cirrhosis of the liver “. In his bookThe Jack LaLanne’s Exercise Way to Vibrant Health , LaLanne wrote that as a child he was addicted to sugar and junk food. [9] He had violent episodes directed against himself and others, describing himself as “a miserable child … he was like hell”. [10]

In addition to being short-tempered, LaLanne also suffered from headaches and bulimia, temporarily dropping out of high school at age 14. The following year, at 15, he heard health food pioneer Paul Bragg give a talk on health and nutrition, focusing on the “evils of meat and sugar.” [11] Bragg’s message had a powerful influence on LaLanne, who later turned her life around and began to focus on her diet and exercise.

 [12] In his own words, he was “born again” and, in addition to his new focus on nutrition, he began exercising daily (although during WWII he was a first-class pharmacist at Sun Valley Naval Convalescent Hospital, LaLanne stated that I have started in bodybuilding at “[13] Describing her diet change, LaLanne said, “I had to take my lunch alone to the football field so no one would see me eat raw vegetables, whole wheat bread, raisins, and nuts. Writer Hal Reynolds, who interviewed LaLanne in 2008, notes that he became an avid swimmer and trained with weights; He described his introduction to weightlifting like this:

[LaLanne] found two men exercising in a back room, keeping weights in a locked box. When he asked them if he could use their weights, they laughed at him and said, “Boy, you can’t even lift those weights.” So he challenged them both to a wrestling match with the bet that if he could beat them, they would give him a key to the box. After he beat them both, they gave him a key and used their pesos until he was able to buy his own. [14]

LaLanne went back to school, where he was on the high school football team, and then went on to college in San Francisco, where he earned a Doctor of Chiropractic degree. I have studied Anatomy of the Human Body from Henry Gray and concentrated on bodybuilding and weightlifting. [eleven]

In 1936, he opened the nation’s first health and fitness club in Oakland, California, [11] where he offered supervised weight and exercise training and gave nutritional advice. His main goal was to encourage and motivate his clients to improve their overall health. Doctors, however, advised their patients to stay away from their gym, a totally unknown business at the time, and warned their patients that “LaLanne was a ‘freak’ about exercise, whose programs would make them ‘muscular’ and cause serious medical problems. . ” [11] LaLanne recalls the doctors’ initial reaction to his promotion of weightlifting:

People thought he was a charlatan and a wacko. The doctors were against me – they said that exercising with weights would cause heart attacks in people and lose their sex drive. [5]

LaLanne designed the first leg extension machines, cable-using pulley machines, and weight selectors that are now standard in the fitness industry. [citation needed] He invented the original model of what became the Smith machine. [15] LaLanne encouraged women to lift weights (although at the time it was thought that this would make women appear masculine and unattractive).

In the 1980s, Jack LaLanne’s Exercise European health spas numbered over 200. Eventually, he has licensed all of his health clubs to the Bally company, now known as Bally Total Fitness. Although not associated with any gym, LaLanne continued to lift weights until her death. [citation required ]

LaLanne’s ownership of the gym led to a brief professional wrestling career in 1938. [citation needed] Wrestlers were among the few athletes who embraced weight training and frequented his health club. LaLanne wrestled in the Bay Area for just a few months. He was respected enough that he was reserved to fight for a draw against some big-name opponents rather than lose, despite his lack of experience. According to Ad Santel’s grandson David Ad Santel, LaLanne wanted to be a champion from the start, but didn’t have the fighting skills to do it. [citation needed] LaLanne was also friendly with artists like Lou Thesz and Strangler Lewis. [citation required ]

LaLanne featured fitness and exercise tips on television for 34 years. The Jack LaLanne’s Exercise Show was the longest running television exercise program. According to the archives of the SF Chronicle TV show, it began on September 28, 1953 as a 15-minute local morning show (sandwiched between the morning news and a cooking show) on San Francisco’s ABC television station, KGO-TV, with LaLanne paying for airtime himself as a way to promote his gym and health-related products. LaLanne also met his wife Elaine while working for the local station. In 1959, the program was chosen for national distribution and continued until 1985. [citation needed ]

The show stood out for its minimalist setting, where LaLanne inspired his viewers to use basic household objects, such as a chair, to perform his exercises with him. In his standard jumpsuit, he urged his audience “with the enthusiasm of an evangelist” to get off the couch and copy his basic movements, a form considered the forerunner of today’s fitness videos. [11] [16] : see In 1959, LaLanne recorded Glamor Stretcher Time , an exercise album that provided phonograph-based instructions for exercising with an elastic cord called the Glamor Stretcher. [17]As a daytime show, much of LaLanne’s audience were stay-at-home moms.

LaLanne blamed overly processed foods for many health problems. For most of his life, Jack was mostly a vegetarian and included fish in his dinner. [22] [verification failed] In his later years, he seemed [vague] to advocate a largely meatless diet that includes fish, [23] [24] and takes vitamin supplements. [25] [26] [27]

LaLanne summarized her philosophy on good nutrition and exercise:

Dying is easy. Living is a pain in the butt. It is like a sporting event. You have to train for that. You have to eat right. You have to exercise. Your health account, your bank account, they are the same. The more you put in, the more you can get out. Exercise is king and nutrition is queen – together, they have a kingdom. [29]

Opinions on food additives and medicines

LaLanne often emphasized that artificial food additives, medications, and processed foods contributed to making people mentally and physically ill. As a result, he writes, many people turn to alcohol and drugs to deal with the symptoms of ailments, noting that “a stream of aches and pains seems to surround us as we age.” [30] : 114 He refers to the human bloodstream as a “river of life”, which is “polluted” by “junk food” laden with “preservatives, salt, sugar, and artificial flavorings”. [30] : 167

Based on evidence from the Presidential Fitness Council, he also agreed that “a lot of our aches and pains stem from a lack of physical activity.” As an immediate remedy for symptoms such as constipation, insomnia, tiredness, anxiety, shortness of breath or high blood pressure, LaLanne says that people will turn to various drugs: “We look for crutches such as sleeping pills, cheering pills, alcohol, cigarettes , etc.” [30]

LaLanne died of respiratory failure due to pneumonia at her home on January 23, 2011.   • 1954 (age 40): swam the 8,981 feet (1.7 miles; 2.7 km) length of the Golden Gate in San Francisco, underwater, with 140 lb (64 kg; 10 st) of air tanks and other equipment tied to your body; a world record. [35]
  • 1955 (age 41) – Swam from Alcatraz Island to Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco while handcuffed. When subsequently interviewed, he was quoted as saying that the worst thing about the ordeal was being handcuffed, which significantly reduced his ability to do a jump. [citation required ]

  • 1958 (age 44): Maneuvered a non-stop paddle board from the Farallon Islands to the coast of San Francisco. The 30 mile (48 km) journey took 9.5 hours. [citation required ]
  • 1959 (45 years old) – Did 1,000 push-ups and 1,000 push-ups in 1 hour, 22 minutes, to promote The Jack LaLanne Show nationwide. LaLanne said this was the most difficult of her stunts, but only because the skin on her hands started to tear during pull-ups. He felt that he couldn’t stop himself, because it would be seen as a public failure.

On June 10, 2005, then-Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger inaugurated the California Governor’s Council on Fitness and Sports . In his speech, Schwarzenegger paid a special tribute to LaLanne, whom he credited with demonstrating the benefits of fitness and a healthy lifestyle for 75 years. [41] In 2008, he inducted LaLanne into the California Hall of Fame and personally presented her with an inscription plaque at a special ceremony.

In 2007, LaLanne received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the President’s Council. The award is given to “individuals whose careers have greatly contributed to the advancement or promotion of physical activity, fitness, or sports across the country.” Winners are chosen based on “the person’s career, the estimated number of lives the person has touched through their work, the legacy of the person’s work, and any additional awards or honors received throughout their career.” [42]
