The mucous membrane of the nose is our first rampart against attacks, whether microbes or allergens. Hence, it is important to take care of it and optimize its defenses when necessary. Many nasal hygiene solutions can be found in pharmacies. Some are anti-infectious and naturally treat colds; others prevent sinusitis or otitis.

Why do you have to clean your nose when the air is too dry?

Itching, sneezing, or sometimes scabs and small nosebleeds can testify to dryness of the nasal mucosa, common in overheated, air-conditioned, or dusty atmospheres. Apart from the discomfort, it disrupts mucus production, which traps the pathogens, and the movement of the vibrating cilia, which pushes them outwards. Nose washes are then used to restore humidification and optimize the functioning of the respiratory tract cells.

Why should you clean your nose in case of a cold or allergy?

Nose washes are essential when you have a cold or in case of allergies! They promote the elimination of intruders (allergens, viruses, bacteria, etc.) and rid excess mucus and cellular debris generated by local inflammation. “In addition, in the event of a cold, it is logical to think that they reduce the risk of bacterial superinfection, which can lead to sinusitis, bronchitis, or acute otitis media,” says Professor Nicolas Leboulanger.

  • Itchy nose, sneezing. Is it a cold or an allergy?

Physiological serum or seawater: which Saline Nasal Spray to choose?

  • Saline is a balanced sodium chloride solution, with no other associated minerals, unlike seawater.
  • Rich in mineral salts and trace elements (magnesium, calcium, potassium, manganese, copper, sulfur, etc.), seawater resembles the liquid composition in which our cells are bathed. These minerals promote the proper functioning of the hair cells of the nasal mucosa, these famous eyelashes that help eliminate dust and microbes. They also facilitate the production of protective mucus, rich in antibodies.

However, certain saline solutions can be useful in the event of a cold, in particular those enriched with surfactants (polysorbate 80), which loosen and thin the annoying secretions to blow your nose better.

What is the difference between isotonic and hypertonic seawater?

  • Very salty seawater is made isotonic (i.e., with a concentration of salt or sodium chloride identical to that of our body, i.e., nine g/l) by dilution with water or electrodialysis, a method that keeps the content of other minerals intact. Non-aggressive, it can be used over the long term when suffering from rhinitis or chronic sinusitis. In young children, it makes it easier to blow your nose to ventilate the middle ear well, the first step in preventing serious otitis!
  • Hypertonic seawater solutions, the salt concentration of which often exceeds 20 g/l, are also available. More irritating to the nasal mucosa, they are reserved for occasional use in the event of a stuffy nose or acute sinusitis: they then create a call for water which unclogs the congested cells.
  • Some dirty sea waters are enriched with trace elements such as copper, anti-infective and anti-inflammatory, useful in acute viral or bacterial infection, or even manganese used to cure allergy sufferers. As for sulfur, it plays an important role in immune defenses: it is commonly prescribed in ENT or recurrent respiratory infections.
  • Antiviral and decongestant essential oils (eucalyptus, thyme, rosemary, etc.) are sometimes combined with hypertonic seawater. They are indicated in case of colds but not before three years, even 12 years for some, and are used with caution in people with allergies or a history of convulsions.

When to use saline and when to use seawater?

In case of an irritated or runny nose, the action of nose washes with either of these Saline Nasal Spray solutions is similar. Physiological serum, which is salt water in pods, is economical and suitable for the eyes. Isotonic seawater, in spray form, is practical to use. It also contains trace elements (phosphorus, manganese) that promote cells’ proper functioning.

Hypertonic seawater (more concentrated in salt) is more effective when the nose is blocked because it also acts on nasal congestion. More aggressive, this solution is only used for a few days.

The right move? Head tilted to the side, spray enough volume into the upper nostril so that the liquid flows to the other nostril. Rinse the tip with warm soapy water, especially if several people use the same Saline Nasal Spray.

How do clean children’s noses?

Nose washing helps young children blow their noses and limits coughing. In a baby under six months whose breathing is exclusively nasal, it is essential: “If we do not free his airways in the cold, he can no longer breathe or eat,” explains Dr. Michèle Berlioz-Baudoin.

The only physiological serum is recommended for the first few months “and is suitable for self-medication for up to 3 years”, continues the pediatrician.

The correct technique for infants can be found on pedia-sante.net. When the child is older, nose washing can be done with the head straight but not the head backward, which causes false paths.

Good to know: Sniffing is a bad habit, especially for young children! Sniffing pushes the phlegm towards the bronchi or the ear, which communicates via a conduit with the nasopharyngeal junction. The only essential daily gesture is to blow your nose!

Our selection of nose spray

Some Saline Nasal Spray can be used daily for nasal hygiene. Others are to be used occasionally, during a cold.

Marimer Ritual of hydration, the spray pocket version

How much does it cost? €5 for a 50ml spray. Gilbert laboratory.

What are its particularities? Isotonic seawater is desalinated by electrodialysis, which preserves its trace element content. Enriched with a seaweed extract, sweet, moisturizing, and soothing laminaria. A practical take-out format.

In which cases? Daily in case of irritation or discomfort related to nasal dryness or at the start of a cold. From 3 years.

The pharmacist’s opinion: It’s good to include a seaweed extract as a moisturizing agent (rather than aloe vera or calendula) in a seawater spray! A formula is also suitable in the aftermath of a cold when the mucous membrane is irritated by repeated blowing.

Humer Daily hygiene, the gentle spray for the nostrils

How much does it cost? 5 € approximately the spray of 100 ml. Urgo laboratory.

What are its particularities? This isotonic solution contains 32% undiluted seawater (desalinated by electrodialysis) and 68% thermal water drawn from near the Pyrenees. The interest? A unique composition of trace elements and minerals (silicon, sulfur).

In which cases? When the nose runs and itches in case of seasonal allergies or colds, as long as necessary.

The pharmacist’s opinion: This spray has a very gentle diffusion mode which makes washing the nose pleasant, a plus for children!

Physiomer Jet Dynamique, the spray for a refreshing wash

How much does it cost? Around €5.50 for a 135ml spray. Sanofi laboratory.

What are its particularities? This undiluted isotonic seawater reference (obtained by electrodialysis) is distinguished by its diffusion mode, which is more powerful than other devices. Without being aggressive, the volume of diffused seawater is greater, facilitating the nasal cavities’ washing.

In which cases? From the age of 6, in case of allergic rhinitis, chronic rhinitis, or colds when the secretions are fluid but important.

The pharmacist’s opinion: It is an essential reference appreciated by adults because it evacuates mucus while ensuring a gentle cleansing. It can be used as often and for as long as needed.

ProRhinel Stuffy nose runny nose, the thinning spray

How much does it cost? Around €6.50 for a 100ml spray. GlaxoSmithKline Laboratory.

What are its particularities? The physiological serum is enriched with polysorbate 80, a thinning agent that facilitates the detachment of nasal secretions. Contains benzododecinium, an antiseptic.

In which cases? From the age of 6, in the event of a cold, when the nose is congested, you cannot blow your nose effectively. There is a version for the youngest with a suitable nosepiece.

The pharmacist’s note: This spray makes blowing your nose easier. A formula is well suited to children who sometimes have trouble blowing to eliminate thick secrets. Use several times a day during colds.

Stérimar Stuffy nose, the anti-infective spray

How much does it cost? Between €6 and €7 for a 100ml spray. Sofitel laboratory.

What are its particularities? This spray contains a hypertonic sea water solution with a higher salt concentration than that of body fluids. This difference in concentration pushes the water out of the cells, which unclogs the nasal mucosa. Enriched with copper for its anti-infective properties.

In which cases? From 3 years old, in case of stuffy nose following a cold or sinusitis.

The pharmacist’s opinion: A formula adapted to infectious episodes when it is difficult to breathe due to congestion of the mucous membranes. Tingling is frequent, linked to the salt content of the solution, but transient. To be used for a few days only.
